Private Telephone System (PBX/KTS)

A PBX, or private branch exchange, is a telephone system installed in a business entity to perform services among the many extensions within the business as well as to connect to outside lines. PBXs are in effect the private (and of course, smaller) version of a public telephone company's central office (CO) switch.

A Key Telephone System (KTS) is a smaller version of a PBX that also provides direct access to outside telephone lines. When an outside line button is pressed on a KTS phone, the dial tone is immediately obtained from the CO. In contrast, on a PBX system, the digit '9' is usually pressed to get the dial tone from the CO. Typically, KTS are used for less than 30 extensions.

These hybrid systems typically serve up to 100 In a PBX/Digital Key Hybrid system, both the voice signals and control information transmitted between station sets are sent as 1's and 0's, in other words as digital binary data. Any Analog voice signals received from the CO are converted to digital voice data and sent through the PBX. Digital voice data may be sent outside the PBX if outside networks are also digital circuits; however, they are usually converted back to analog voice signals.

Voice Over IP

Voice over IP (VoIP) refers to telephone calls sent over Internet Protocol (IP) based data networks. Voice information is sent in digital form in discrete packets rather than in the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN). Facsimiles can also be sent in the same manner. This has led to Internet service providers competing with the PSTN (voice) for customers. The savings initially seem to be in the area of long distance calls. This is primarily because VoIP avoids the tolls charged by ordinary telephone service.

Voice and Data Networking

Separate voice & data services - Historically private business telephone and computer systems have been based on autonomous networks managed independently of each other.

Voice Services - In this environment, the phone systems are generally with local dial tone, long distance services, and point-point analog services.

Data services - Generally include Internet connectivity, VPN's, Wide Area Networks, Co-locations, converged networks, video and more.

Shared voice and data network - Sharing network bandwidth is now normal practice. This option statically segments and shares the available network bandwidth between the voice and data requirements. The voice system still uses existing PABX technology, telephones and systems, networked together over the shared network.
